Re-launched in 2005, the competition has evolved from the British Box & Packaging Association Awards, which can trace its history back to 1959.

The Awards provide a showcase for successful entrants and recognise the contribution of designers in bringing concepts to reality.

Categories are reviewed regularly to reflect the evolving demands of consumers and the industry, customer base. Current categories comprise:

  1. Machine made rigid box
  2. Corrugated Box
  3. Graphics
  4. Pack involving composite materials
  5. Hand made pack

Judging criteria includes suitability for purpose, product protection, point of sales impact and innovation.

A Supreme Award is selected by independent judges for the pack with the greatest combination of innovation, point of sale impact and commercial value.

British Packaging Association
The British Packaging Association is the reincarnation of the British Box & Packaging Association which dates back to the early 1900’s.  The renaming of the association in 2003 reflects the broader scope of its membership which has evolved from its original rigid cardboard box roots and now encompasses a wider range of companies involved in the paperboard packaging chain including manufacturers of solid board, suppliers and distributors.

Who is the Association aimed at ?
Membership will appeal to independent owner managed companies who have limited resources to deal with the increasing demands of business today.
Specifically:
Manufacturers of rigid cardboard boxes, folding cartons, paperboard tubes and other speciality paper based packaging.
Suppliers of ancillary materials such as metal , plastic and polystyrene.

What are the objectives ?
• To provide a commercially targeted service.
• To be affordable
• To provide a stimulating forum for networking and discussion of
            common problems.
• To provide relaxed forums for members to meet socially.

How are we structured ?
The Associations activities are coordinated through the offices of the National Packaging Council.  We are a founding member and share these services with 3 other related trade organisations. Ie
Sheet Plant Association
Environmental & Technical Association for the Paper Sack Industry

As well as the permanent secretariat, the Association has its own council meetings chaired by the Executive director to which all members are invited. Notices calling the meetings are sent out approximately six weeks prior to the date. At these meetings all members are encouraged to air any views or grievances perceived or otherwise to ensure  open debate.

What does membership cost ?
Less than £10 per week for most members.  Currently subscriptions vary between £300 and £600 pa depending on  Turnover.

Why should I Join ?
The pressures of business continue to increase.  Key issues facing us at present are competition from low labour cost economies and the ever increasing burden of legislation.  By coordinating our response to these threats and sharing our experiences, the industry will be stronger and more effective.

About Us

March 30th, 2008

History

The Association was renamed the British Packaging Association in 2003.

Originally established in 1908 as the National Paper Boxmakers’ Association, the British Box & Packaging Association (BBPA) has long been recognized as the only trade association serving principally the plain and decorative box industry.

Incorporating the Packaging Distributors Association enabled involvement of distributors and suppliers. This means the scope and accessibility of services available to any member of the BPA is excellent and comprehensive.

Profile

The Association is managed by a national Council elected from the membership and devolves from there to regional committees. Close liaison is maintained with other corporate groups involved in the wider packaging and paper products industry. Seminars and technical meetings often include representatives from such groups and the aim is to improve the collective voice of the broader industry.

The BPA is a founder member of the National Packaging Council.

A wide range of services are available to members.

  • Health & Safety
  • Legal Helpline
  • Industrial Relations
  • Industry Standards
  • Commercial Insurance
  • Environmental Affairs
  • Free information and advice

As well as a variety of social events and the opportunity to network with industry colleagues.

New members are always welcome - for further information on joining the British Packaging Association click here.

National Competition

The British Packaging Association participates in an annual Design & Construction Awards competition. There are a variety of categories and the competition is also open to members of the Sheet Plant Association, affiliated through membership of National Packaging Council. Trophies are presented and winners announced during the Annual Conference weekend each March. The Association also participates in international competition with colleagues from the United States and Canada.

Affiliations

The BPA has close links with the North American Packaging Association (NAPA) as well as its UK affiliations through National Packaging Council.
